The Butt Dial That Changed My Day

You’ve gotten the call, right? The one that comes up on your screen and you answer to hear no response on the other end.

We love our friends, but sometimes you manage to go through all the physiological reactions of the worst emergency you can conjure up just to hear crickets, or even worse, not even crickets!

And when you do get the person it was just a butt dial and no one was in any serious danger. Thank goodness for that, but surely all that anxiety burned at least a few calories 😉

I would consider today a special butt dial day. (Next thing you know this will be on a calendar somewhere, as we seem to celebrate the most unusual things on some calendars. So remember this, as I might be onto something here…)

I dropped my daughter off at camp this morning and was getting in my car ready to leave the parking lot when my phone rang. Admittedly I had to look twice at my phone for it to actually register. “Jessica Cell.” Why would Jessica be calling me? Why would Jessica be calling me this early? It’s 2 hours earlier where she lives and it’s only 8:30am here!

But then I answer. And of course my phone would have to be plugged into my auxiliary jack, and not be working properly. So all I could hear was something that sounded like a little mouse. When I finally got it all unplugged she was still on the line (whew!).

I think she was just as surprised to hear my voice as I was hers.

The reality was we hadn’t spoken offline in several years.

We both had to laugh at the butt dial reality, BUT (no pun intended)  we ended up having an hour long conversation.

You see, neither of us would’ve made that call, especially not at that time of day because we were both busy with life. But at the same time, when that call occurred, neither of us rushed to hang up because we had something more important to do.

Today we slowed down. Today we had a wonderful conversation about life and those things that we’d been through. About how precious each day is, and how what we’ve been through encourages each of us to live a more full and present life. About the challenges and revelations of our past and present.

One of the things she mentioned was how much she enjoyed doing the 7 Days 7 Smiles challenge with me. For her it was a time to slow down, and sometimes just stop, and notice the small tokens of beauty we tend to overlook. Having that positive interaction each day brightened her entire day. I’m so thankful to have been able to be part of that 🙂

Today we talked like two friends who hadn’t been separated by distance for a decade. What a beautiful thing!

Needless to say, the course of my day was altered significantly. I smiled bigger the rest of the day. Because of our conversation, I am encouraged to continue dreaming big, and striving for the happiness and peace you feel inside when you’re on the right track.

And above all else, I am grateful to have had that precious time with my friend. She’s a beautiful soul whose life journey is nothing less than inspirational.

P.S. Who could you butt dial today? Or better yet, who could you just call because it would mean the world to them to hear your voice? Call them. You may never know how much they needed you today.
