Get Your Socks Out of the Fridge!

Yes, I know, it’s something you hear everyday, “Get your socks out of the fridge!”

Oddly enough this is inspired by a completely true story. I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse?

The past 24 hours at my house have not been dull, to say the least. When unexpected events arise, it’s always a strategic adventure.

Today is the last day of the Gratitude Challenge. It was difficult to decide what to post about today, to decide what it was I was most grateful for today.

If you’ve missed any of the other days of the Gratitude Challenge, you can catch up HERE.

Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5 & Day 6

Today I am choosing simplicity as what I’m grateful for. There are so many times that we overlook some of the most useful and/or functional things by trying to have the “best” version. Sometimes the “best” is only an opinion we have been given, or it’s actually a better fit for someone else. What is the best fit for you may not always be what is deemed the best by societal norms.

Take for example the socks in the fridge. Technically it is one sock, and it is located in my freezer. Why, you ask? Isn’t that where you keep your extras?

I needed an ice pack to use as a cold compress for an injury. It wasn’t something I could use our normal lunch box ice packs for. It needed to be pliable, small, and cold. So I scanned everything I had. I even went to the old, “use a bag of frozen peas.” And oddly enough I actually had frozen peas! I don’t tend to keep those so I was quite impressed. The problem was that the bag was a little too big for what I needed. So I continued to analyze all the things in the freezer.

Do you ever buy those frozen meals that come with sauce packets? We have a favorite frozen chicken from Trader Joe’s that comes with two teriyaki sauce packs. When I fix it I only use one sauce pack for the entire bag though. Therefore, I had kept the extra sauce pack in the freezer for some reason.

I spotted it…it was the perfect size…it was kind of squishy…and it was COLD! Perfect! So I grabbed a little rag, wrapped it around the packet and we were set.

Fast forward to this morning. We needed to reapply the cold compress again. Luckily I had put the sauce back in the freezer to refreeze overnight. I walked over to grab another rag and lo and behold there was a little sock on top of the stack of clean towels. It was a little smaller than the socks normally are so I obviously assumed the dryer had eaten it and finally decided to cough it up.

Among closer inspection I realized it was a sock that had been outgrown, and must’ve gotten mixed in with the laundry on accident—because…really, a dryer eating socks? That would never happen…

Then it hit me! That sauce packet would fit perfectly inside this little sock! No more worrying about the rag, finding one, wrapping it around the frozen sauce packet awkwardly, etc.

So I grabbed it and went to the freezer to get the sauce packet. Perfect fit!

After we applied the compress I put it back in the freezer, sock and all. So when you open my freezer there is a little sock in the door with rainbows on it, and it has Wednesday written on the side.

The point of the story is I could’ve been disgruntled about not having a proper icepack to use as a cold compress and added that to my list to buy at the store when I went. Because let’s face it, we don’t want to be the one without the best option.

OR, I could be grateful for simplicity.

I am choosing to be grateful for simplicity, for creativity, for functionality. And for the fact that I didn’t spend a dime to get what was the best fit for what I needed. And honestly, how many other people do you know that have a rainbow Wednesday sock in their freezer? Exactly!

Be a rainbow Wednesday sock fan! My guess is you have some clever hacks you’ve implemented in your life as well. I’m beyond curious to know about them! Leave a comment below with your favorite clever hack, or leave a comment on the MyQ2Life.com Facebook page. I can’t wait!

P.S. Just so we set the record straight, no, I’m not planning to use the extra sauce packet for dinner. I may post a picture of the sock in my fridge as part of the 7 Days 7 Smiles though. That’s definitely something that has made me smile today!
